Fort Frederica

Hike review: Superior! The Spanish Moss alone gives this walk high marks, but there is also so much to see and learn outside with the dogs on the broad, flat lawns under the live oaks. Active archaeology, early colonial history, and the old fort with a magnificent view.

Built to protect the English colonial coastal border with Spain, this outpost was also where John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, spent his time as an Anglican preacher during the years after the founding of Savannah in 1733 before returning home to England to start the Evangelical movement. Active archeology continues on the site – and it is the perfect place to enjoy a sunset! This site has especially high -quality, informative interpretive signage, and St Simons Island itself is quite luxurious in the Savannah style. Other visitors with dogs were around, but the site is so open and spacious that it felt very serene.
